The other day I was having a conversation with my husband, Charles, and during the conversation, I made a statement: "I want to be known for ______." I didn't think much of it at the time. I was just sharing my wants and desires.
The next day, as I was going about my business, conviction began to set in. Do I want my legacy to be an earthly one, or do I want my legacy to be a heavenly one? This was no accident. This was conviction, and it was on time. During my devotion that morning, I was reading in Colossians 3:1-2:
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:1-2
It is so easy for our desires to be centered around the things of the world. Often, we spend so much time building our own kingdom that we neglect building His. Our identity can become attached to what we do, rather than to who we serve.
It was in that moment of conviction that I thought about my legacy. On the day the Lord calls me home, I want to be known for loving Jesus, living a life of following and serving God.
His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master! Matthew 25:23
I don't want to be known for working for X, or being a good employee, or doing this or that. I want to be known for living a life rooted in faith.
I want to encourage you to take an honest look at your desires right now. Are they set on earthly things, or on things above?
So, I ask you: what do you want to be known for?
